Dundee Centre of Mission

Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city and has some of the highest rates of unemployment and drug-related deaths in the UK. Among the Dundee Centre of Mission’s key objectives are growing new expressions of Christian community and inspiring mission and evangelism within the Scottish Episcopal Church.

The Dundee Centre of Mission was opened in September 2014, in partnership with St Luke’s Church Downfield in Dundee, the Diocese of Brechin and the international development agency Signpost International. Its work includes:

  • Soup ‘n Soul, a weekly event offering food and friendship for people with difficult life circumstances, including the homeless and those with substance abuse problems. During 2015-16 1,646 meals were served to vulnerable people through the event.
  • Pirate Monks, a weekly group meeting that encourages and challenges men in their daily faith walk. Many of the men who attend are struggling with addictions, deep hurts, broken relationships and low self-esteem.
  • Café church held at St Luke’s Church in Downfield. When the Dundee Centre of Mission first opened, there were only five elderly people attending the service; the numbers have now increased to around 35 people.
  • Mentoring/home visits to vulnerable and marginalised people and offering support through: accompanying individuals to appointments with doctors and social workers; helping with finance management, savings schemes and help with utilities; helping individuals settle into council housing (setting up utilities, finding furniture, assisting in painting and house repairs); collecting clothing items and food parcels for them; providing spiritual support through prayer and providing lifts to and from church services and other Christian events.
