The Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell (Chair)

Stephen Cottrell has been on the board since September 2011. He has been Bishop of Chelmsford since 2010 and before that was Bishop of Reading. He is a passionate evangelist and his entire CV is rooted in evangelism. He was a founder member of the Church of England's College of Evangelists. His previous jobs have included being a member of the Springboard Team which was the evangelism initiative of Archbishop George Carey, and the Diocesan Missioner for Wakefield. The General Synod of the Church of England nominated Bishop Stephen to be a Board member and both the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have encouraged him to be the Chair of Church Army.

DES SCOTT (CHief Executive Officer)

Des Scott was appointed Interim Chief Executive following the resignation of Mark Russell in July 2019.

John Whitfield (Treasurer)

John was elected to the Board in November 2016. He is an Accountant by profession, and was a Partner with Price Waterhouse Coopers in London where he was one of their senior team. John is now retired and lives in Castleton in the Peak District and is a gifted musician.

The Rt Rev Alan Abernethy

Bishop Alan was co-opted to the Church Army Board in December 2015. He is the former Bishop of Connor (2007 until his retirement in December 2019) and before that served as rector in Ballyholme parish in the Diocese of Down and Dromore from 1990. His particular interests are in mission and spirituality.

The Ven Dr John Applegate

John Applegate is currently the Course Principal at the All Saints Centre for Mission and Ministry. He is based on the Warrington campus of Chester University and has overall responsibility for the course and students. Prior to this he served as Archdeacon of Bolton and before that as an academic in Manchester University and Area Dean of Salford.

TREVOR DOUGLAS

Trevor currently servies as Diocesan Development Officer for the Diocese of Connor. Prior to this he worked at a large parish where he was responsible for delivering £2.4 million of funding to develop The Jethro Centre, a large parish centre operating as a social/economic community outreach project. Over the past year Trevor has been seconded to Belfast Cathedral as Acting General Manager to assist the Dean with staffing, delivering a new financial plan and devloping new income streams. Trevor has been married to Karen for 36 years and has two daughters, Laura, a paramedic and Joy, a teacher. He loves sport, especially cricket, football and Formula 1. He was co-opted to the Board in September 2020.

Steve Eccleston

Steve Eccleston has been a board member since September 2011. He is currently Assistant Director of Legal Services for Sheffield City Council and specialises in public law and litigation. He also sits on an Assistant Coroner. Steve was appointed to the Board on the recommendation of the Bishop of Sheffield.

THE RT REV guLI FRANCIS-DEHQANI

Born in Iranin1966, Guli moved to England following the events of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Having studied music as an undergraduate, she worked at the BBC for a few years before training for ordination and completing a PhD. Guli was ordained in 1998 and has served as the Bishop of Loughborough since 2017. She was co-opted to the Board in September 2020.

THE Rt Rev Robert Gillies

Bishop Robert was elected to the Board in November 2016 and was the Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney from 2007 to 2016. He is committed to church growth, evangelism and pioneering more fresh expressions in the church.

THE Rev Lusa Nsenga-Ngoy

Lusa was co-opted to the Board in 2018. Lusa is the BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) Mission and Ministry enabler for the Diocese of Leicester, and is passionate about raising up and empowering people into leadership and ministry. He is also passionate about justice, community organising and is a Trustee for Making Herstory which is committed to ending the abuse, enslavement and trafficking of women.

The Rt Rev Joanna Penberthy

Bishop Joanna was elected to the board in November 2017 and is Bishop of St David's - the first woman to be appointed Bishop in the Church in Wales. Bishop Joanna knows the church in Wales well having been born in Swansea, grown up in Cardiff and having served two stints as a priest in the province as well as holding posts in the Church of England

Sister KAREN WEBB CA

Karen was elected to the board in November 2017. Karen first started employment with Church Army as part-time children’s worker working with Captain John O'Neill in April 2005, and then as part of the Lisburn Centre of Mission. She was selected for training as an Evangelist in 2011 and was commissioned in July 2013. She is currently the Lead Pioneer Evangelist in the North Belfast Centre of Mission.

Sister KAthy green CA

Kathy was elected to the board in November 2018. She was commissioned in 2007 and her first post was as parish evangelist with special responsibility to older people on Manor Parish in Sheffield.  She now leads the multifaith chaplaincy service at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and is Local Mission Community Leader for the Diocese of Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham.
